The Dachshund has a much more complex personality than its size might suggest.

It is an intelligent, determined and attentive dog. It retains the characteristics of a breed originally selected for work and therefore has personality, initiative and natural curiosity.

At the same time, it can form an extremely close bond with the people it lives with, becoming an involved and affectionate companion in family life.

It is precisely this combination of character, intelligence and ability to build strong relationships that makes the Dachshund such a fascinating breed.

For us, it is important to preserve these characteristics through careful selection focused not only on conformation, but also on health and temperament.

Miniature and Kaninchen Dachshunds

In our kennel, we select Dachshunds in the Miniature and Kaninchen sizes.

The distinction between the different Dachshund sizes is not simply a matter of appearance. Official classification is determined according to the criteria established by the breed standard and should not be confused with commercial terms such as “mini Dachshund” or “toy Dachshund”.

For this reason, we always prefer to use the correct terms: Miniature Dachshund and Kaninchen Dachshund.

A dog's final size is assessed according to the criteria established by the breed standard and cannot be guaranteed simply by looking at the size of a puppy during its first weeks of life.

When a family contacts us looking for a Miniature or Kaninchen Dachshund, we therefore prefer to explain clearly the characteristics of the breed and the differences between the sizes, avoiding expectations based solely on how small the puppy appears.

Smooth-haired and Long-haired Dachshunds

Di Casa Ellen breeds Miniature and Kaninchen Dachshunds in both smooth-haired and long-haired varieties.

The two coat varieties share the fundamental characteristics of the breed, although they differ in appearance and coat care.

The smooth-haired Dachshund has a short, close-fitting coat that clearly highlights the characteristic lines of the breed.

The long-haired Dachshund has a more developed coat, which requires appropriate care to preserve its beauty and quality.

The choice between smooth-haired and long-haired is often a matter of personal preference, but during our meetings we are also happy to explain the practical differences in everyday coat care.

Regardless of coat variety, what remains fundamental to us is the overall quality of the dog: health, temperament, structure and breed type.

Selection, Health and Temperament

Every litter begins with a carefully considered choice of breeding dogs.

When planning matings, we evaluate pedigree, conformation, health and temperament, with the aim of maintaining and improving the qualities we consider important in our breeding programme.

Knowing the bloodlines and observing the development of our dogs over time is a fundamental part of our work as breeders.

Health naturally plays a central role.

Our breeding dogs are carefully monitored and undergo the health checks required and considered appropriate in relation to the breed, variety and bloodlines used.

We also pay great attention to temperament.

The Dachshund is a lively and determined dog, and for this reason we believe it is important to select dogs that express the typical temperament of the breed while maintaining balance and a good ability to relate to people.

How Our Dachshund Puppies Are Raised

The first weeks of life represent a fundamental stage in a puppy's development.

We personally follow our litters from birth and gradually guide the puppies through the different stages of growth.

As the weeks pass, the puppies are given the opportunity to experience different people, environments, surfaces, sounds and stimuli, always respecting their age and individual pace.

Proper socialisation does not mean exposing a puppy indiscriminately to every possible situation.

It means gradually offering positive experiences that can help the puppy develop curiosity, adaptability and confidence.

We also carefully observe the temperament of each individual puppy.

Even within the same litter, different personalities may begin to emerge.

This knowledge allows us to help future families identify the puppy whose characteristics and temperament may be most compatible with their lifestyle.

ENCI Pedigree and Puppy Documentation

Di Casa Ellen Dachshund puppies are placed with their new families in compliance with applicable regulations and accompanied by the required documentation.

At the time the puppy leaves our kennel, depending on its age and the procedures already completed, it is provided with:

• ENCI pedigree

• microchip and corresponding registration

• health record

• vaccinations appropriate for its age

• completed parasite treatments

• documentation relating to the transfer of ownership

Before leaving the kennel, the puppies are also examined by a veterinarian.

Our relationship with the families does not end when the puppy leaves Di Casa Ellen.

We remain available afterwards to provide guidance and support throughout the different stages of the dog's development.

Choosing a Dachshund Puppy

The Dachshund's small size should not lead people to consider it simply a small companion dog.

It is a dog with a distinctive personality: intelligent and determined.

Before placing one of our puppies, we therefore like to get to know the future family, understand the environment in which the dog will live and discuss their expectations regarding the arrival of the puppy.

Di Casa Ellen is located in Mesola, in the province of Ferrara, within the Po Delta area of northern Italy.

Our location makes us easily accessible from different parts of Emilia-Romagna and the neighbouring Veneto region.

We welcome families interested in our Dachshund from Ferrara and the surrounding area, as well as from Rovigo, Padua, Venice, Bologna and Ravenna, and from other regions of Italy.

However, we believe that distance should not be the primary criterion when choosing a breeder.

When deciding to welcome a Dachshund into your family, it is far more important to understand the breeder's work, how breeding dogs are selected, how puppies are raised and whether you share the same approach to the breed.
